Laser Hair Removal

Why Laser Hair Removal?

There are many methods to remove unwanted body hair, most of them are tedious and the hair is only removed for a short period of time. Hair removal processes such as shaving and waxing can leave you with nicks, ingrown hairs and bumps. With the laser hair removal services that we offer you can eliminate the hassles associated with traditional forms of hair removal and finally achieve long-lasting results.

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal uses the power of a concentrated laser beam that passes through the skin, targeting hair follicles. The pigment within the hair follicle absorbs the light, which causes damage to those follicles. This process slows hair growth, and often prevents hair from growing back in the treated areas.

The laser will only target the hair follicles, and does not cause damage to your skin.  The device can also treat numerous hair follicles at once, which can significantly reduce your total treatment time.

Is laser hair removal painful?

To eliminate pain caused from the laser heat we continually cool the epidermis (outer layer of the skin) during the treatment.  Most patients experience zero discomfort.

If necessary, patients may choose to use a topical anesthetic to control pain.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser hair removal is permanent in most cases and consistently provides long lasting results for years.

How long does each laser hair removal treatment take?

The treatment time depends on size of area(s) you wish to have treated. For example, the underarms may take ten (10) minutes to treat, and the legs may take forty-five (45) minutes to treat.

Who are good candidates for hair removal?

Male or female, body or face, tanned or not, and those of any skin color can receive successful, safe and effective treatments with our laser.

Those who have blonde or red hair are advised against any kind of laser because the hairs cannot be targeted to fully destroy.  Think of a white t-shirt in the sun, it never gets warm, thus is the same with treating a blonde hair.  Since the laser color is red, it cannot recognize a red hair.

What result should I expect after each hair removal treatment?

After your treatment, the active hair may appear to grow for up to three weeks. This is simply the treated hair being shed from the follicle, and is not new growth.  Once the follicle is shed, after three weeks, you’ll see the smooth hairless skin result.

How many laser hair removal sessions do I need?

Because lasers can only target active hairs, and not all hairs are active, all candidates seeking laser hair removal treatments must receive a minimum of 6 treatments to achieve satisfactory results.
You should receive your treatments every 4 to 6 weeks. Sometimes longer like 8 to 12 weeks if your hair does not grow as fast. Treatments sooner than 4 weeks do NOT provide faster or better results.

What laser machines do you use?

We use industry leading laser devices from Quanta Aesthetic Lasers (www.QuantaUSA.com).

Before your laser hair removal procedure:

  • Please shave the entire area you desire treated the day before your planned treatment.  If you are unable to shave the area yourself, please let us know when making your appointment so we can schedule your time accordingly.
  • Use a broad spectrum SPF 30 (or greater) sunblock before AND after your treatments. No natural or artificial tanning (which includes tanning beds and spray tans) anytime within 2-3 weeks before your session.
  • Avoid exfoliating agents like Retin-A, alpha or beta hydroxy acids, toners or any irritating creams for one week prior.
  • Do not apply any perfumes, deodorant or make-up to the desired area the day of your treatment.
  • If you choose to apply a topical anesthetic, it must be applied 1 hour prior to treatment.

After your laser hair removal procedure:

  • No deodorant for 24 to 48 hours if underarm was treated.
  • Immediately after your treatment there likely will be some slight redness, swelling around the hair follicles and mild discomfort similar to a sunburn.  You may apply aloe vera, hydrocortisone cream 1%, cold compresses or antibiotic cream if needed.
  • You may also notice during and immediately after your session the smell of burned hairs. This is normal.
  • Do not rub, or pick the treated area. Do not use any loofahs or abrasive scrubs for at least 5 days.
  • Avoid strenuous sports activities or hot water / saunas / spa for 3 days.
  • If a crust develops, apply a skin restorative ointment, such as Aquaphor, twice daily, to keep the area moist until healed.
  • Contact us if the area shows signs of infection or blistering.
  • Continue to use sunblock for the duration of your treatments.
  • Shaving is recommended between sessions and is recommended the day prior to your next appointment.  Electrolysis, waxing, threading, tweezing or plucking is to be avoided on the treated areas between sessions, however shaving is encouraged.

How to avoid ingrown hair when shaving prior to laser treatments:

  • Exfoliate regularly after shaving (except immediately after laser treatments) to tease out stubborn ingrown hair.
  • Don't shave too close, use a single bladed razor, shave in the same direction hair is growing, use as few strokes as possible.
  • Wet your skin with warm water before shaving and apply lubricating gel.
  • If an ingrown occurs then apply hydrocortisone cream to reduce swelling and itching.
